The actor needed to act as if he were taking a real Polaroid, and a real image needed to come out of the camera. These images weren't taken for quality, clearly- they were taken basically as props. I think these are so interesting because they are from the actor's perspective, and show all the behind the scenes pieces that go along with filming- the camera operator, the boom operator, lighting guys holding reflectors, etc etc etc. Below are images Jon Heder took during the actual filming of the movie. I never thought tattoos would serve as a resume, but hey Mom- they did!! The photo above is a pretend 'selfie' I took of the three main characters. But I will say- walking on set my first day everyone knew who I was because they saw my numerous Polaroid tattoos. Being the 'Polaroid Consultant' on Tiger Hunter was a really fun and overstimulating job. I took photos of the actors on set, and gave the production a big stack of my own Polaroids from my personal Polaroid portfolio to use as props in and around the sets. And 3) build a portfolio for the main character who was the Polaroid photographer (Napoleon Dynamite). 2) make sure that every camera used on set was always working properly, was loaded with enough Impossible Project instant film, and was on the sidelines ready to reload and restock film at all times.

I had three really important jobs on the set of Tiger Hunter: 1) teach Jon Heder (one of the main characters) how to use a Polaroid SX70 and Impossible Project instant film, and how to act like a photographer.

My first day on set I arrived with a huge camera case full of 6 different instant cameras of various types, numerous instant films, a light meter, snacks, weird old Polaroid paraphernalia that I thought might come in handy, and a manual for the infamous Polaroid SX70 to show Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite).

THE TIGER HUNTER is now playing in select markets.I recently was hired as a 'Polaroid Consultant' on the set of a new Hollywood movie called 'Tiger Hunter,' starring a few very familiar faces- Dani Pudi from the hit comedy 'Community,' Jon Heder who played Napoleon Dynamite, and a bunch of other people that I recognized but don't really know who they are. It’s also sweet without being saccharine. Still, the movie is effortlessly charming, even when its plot knots itself into clichés. Only one genuine ’70s hit makes its way into the film: Cat Stevens’ “Wild World,” whose bittersweet lyrics don’t really jibe with the film’s sunny outlook. Unfortunately, a movie with this small a budget can only afford sound-alikes for its soundtrack.

Especially in the flashback scenes, director Lena Khan – in her feature debut – owes a lot to his style. THE TIGER HUNTER owes a debt to all those movies, as well as Wes Anderson. If all of this sounds like any other number of “trying to make it in the big city” movies, well you’re right. When Sami learns his childhood crush Ruby (Karen David), he and his pals hatch a scheme to pass the boss’ palatial estate off as his own home. He makes friends with the boss’ son (Jon Heder, in what amounts to his biggest role in nearly a decade) and his Dukes of Hazzard-obsessed roommate (Rizwan Manji). Sami takes a job as a draftsman for a company making microwaves, though they struggle with finding one that both fully heats frozen food and doesn’t explode. Sami ends up sharing an apartment with nearly a dozen other immigrants, all working low-end jobs while they wait for their big break. So he takes the leap and moves to Chicago, where he assumes he’ll land a job and house as soon as they see his qualifications.Īs anyone who has struggled to find a good job in their field can tell you, that’s not how it works. But now it’s the late 1970s: his father has since passed, and his engineering degree is useless in a town that’s barely industrialized. His Sami Malik lives in the shadow of his dashing father, who protected his Indian village from tigers. His only defining characteristic is his determination, which doesn’t make for the most dynamic lead (at least since he’s not training in a sport here). Now THE TIGER HUNTER doesn’t really offer him one as rich as Abed. And of course, John Oliver and Donald Glover need no introduction anymore.īut Pudi, thoroughly charming as the socially awkward film student Abed, hasn’t found a solid role yet. Alison Brie has GLOW, Gillian Jacobs has LOVE, Yvette Nicole Brown is on this fall’s THE MAYOR, Joel McHale had a show last year as well as commercials and movies. Sadly, Danny Pudi is the only cast member who hasn’t gone onto bigger things after COMMUNITY came to an end in 2015.
